Whartscape Outlook 2010: Day 2 (Fri 7/23/10) Current Space

FRIDAY JULY 23
CURRENT SPACE
12pm – 10:30pm
Friday is a good mix, Spank Rock and Small Sur are my go-too’s but I hear Spank isn’t playing (surprise) and GZA might fill in (just a rumor). I’ve seen the GZA and it’s good if you know that album back to back, but a few songs in and you might start to look elsewhere.
Update: looks like they have moved some things around, no more Spank Rock on the ticket and Small Sur has moved to Saturday at the Current Space.
Lil-B
Eric Copeland
Who is Copeland? Co-member of Terrestrial Tones with Animal Collective’s Avey Tare. This should be a good DJ set if your into Animal Collective, noisy, experimental, neurotic, and danceable at times.
Get EM Mamis
Always fun. Last time I saw them was at Always Dope a couple months back, it’s tough not to have a good time.
HEIGHT
One of the must-sees of the day, Height . If your jaded by mainstream hip-hop and want to see something new and different that brings in influences from all over the place then go se this. A lot of talent here.
Javelin
Looking for a dance party this weekend? Go see the jams of Javelin. Funky, dancy, good times to be had.
So Percussion
Performing with bands such as memebers of Matmos, the Dirty Projectors, and others, So Percussion might be someone you have seen before and just not known it. An experimental percussion band (re: Not Phish Intermission) that is well worth seeing.
Lord Scrummage
There is something about Lord Scrummage that just makes me happy. Some might call the music video-game’ish , but it’s not your usual electronic nerdcore. This is where Memory Tapes meets Dan Deacon meets Crystal Castles.

Rapdragons
Your hip-hop fill for the day. This says enough
The album’s lead track, “Moon Rocks,” is built on a lurching guitar loop from David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” and features a call-and-response hook in which a sample of the Reading Rainbow theme song soars “I can go anywhere” and the rappers bark back “but my city is the best.” On “Bigwams,” the album’s biggest lyrical showcase, the duo trade speedy rhymes over a sample of Bob Dylan’s “Wigwam.”

We Used To Be Family
You could almost call this Baltimore Prog (Brogressive?.. maybe?). A must see on Friday, a really great band. Never seen them live but one of the acts i’m most looking forward to. Love the dischordant orchestrated music.

Weekends
Been very happy with this bands output this year,if you like your music with a lot of guitar and some really catchy “riffs” (ala Surfer Blood) then this is a goto. Weekends are noisy but melodic.
