Here are a few tracks that are getting a lot of notice around the blogosphere this week.
Elliot Smith – High Times
Ahhh… some more really good music to stab yourself to. I spent last Sunday listening to the entire New Moon CD and loved every minute of it. ALthough depressing, there is also something soothing about Elliot Smith on a Sunday. You’ll learn more about life than going to church.
Interpol – The Heinrich Maneuvre
One of the highlights of Coachella, I am really looking forward to hearing how Interpol evolves on their new album. I always thought they were a little redundant, but still good, so I hope they are a little bit more dynamic on their new album and this song shows they are going in that direction.
M.I.A. – Hit That
I’ve heard you really have to see M.I.A. live to really get her. That being said, I don’t hate this song, it just sounds like everything off of her old album.
Sea Wolf – You’re a Wolf
Great another wolf band. I know it sounds cool to have Wolf in your band name, but can we move onto a another animal like an Otter or Hippo. Anyway, good song with a nice melody and chiming guitar. I like the guys voice, it floats nicely over music.
Yacht – See a Penny (Pick it Up)
We saw this guy open up for LCD. He plugs in a Mac, pushes play and starts dancing around the stage like Napolean Dynamite. He jumped out into the crowd and started dancing and singing out there as well. The sound was a little muffled and the music comes across better on here, I would just love to hear Yacht with more of a band.
Frog Eyes – Bushels
Another band from Canada that sounds a little like Arcade Fire or a lot like Wolf Parade. The song is pretty disjointed.
Handsome Furs – What We Had
These Wolf Parade guys have to really slow down with their side projects, or wait was Wolf Parade a side project. Either way, they might as well all be in the same band and come out with a double album. Their music is good and there are many bands coming out that are imitating it.
Shannon Wright – Everybody’s got their Own Part to Play
Ok, now that all of the Canadian Dischord Rock is out of the way (see the two songs above) we can move on to something different. A female singer in similar vein to Neko Case, only a little more rougher. She is being grouped in with the freak folk scene, although her sound could be a lot more Rocking than a lot I have heard from that “Genre”.
Sir Salvatore – Hooray this Projector
Is this the Strokes? Ok, maybe a little more poppy than the strokes, but that driving repetitive crunchy guitar is the same sound. You can bob your head to this, but then you can jsut go back and listen to “Is This It” for somethign that packs mroe of a punch.
Two Gallants – Feels like Home to Me
This song starts out with very little music, it might as well be acapella, and a very raw folk/country vocal quality. It would be a great camping song, like if you are a cowboy or something and been out to pasture for a long time. There is a lot of Bright Eyes in this, but it is lacking the lyrical heaviness.
