The Oxygen Ponies
It’s that time of year again: Fall. The season where everyone collects their warm and comfy music, like a squirrel collecting nuts, to get them through the winter months. When I think of fall/winter music, i think depressing and dark like Elliott Smith, Sun Kil Moon, or Jeff Buckley. Now it seems I also seem to think of The Oxygen Ponies.

This band, mainly Paul Megna, is from New York and Paul’s bio alone is worth checking them out for: “Paul Megna was taught how to play guitar by his friend, Jeff Buckley – after being shot in the neck by a sniper … Late at night, in an old abandoned barn, he would practice his ’sleepy bedroom pop songs’ over and over until they were memorized and then record them into an answering machine because he didn’t know how to jot them down and was afraid he’d forget them.”
He upgraded from his answering machine to a studio after breaking off his engagement with his 5-year girlfriend. His loss is our gain with the fruition of his self-titled debut album. Both melancholy and almost-ignorantly hopeful, this album sounds like a bowl full of soup (chili is my fav) on a cold chilly night: a sanctuary away from the elements and an escape from the long and dark nights.
Largehearted Boy has an Mp3. As does Salon.com.
Check them out at myspace.
Buy the album.
