Next year is looking to be a pretty epic year for releases, with many “established”" (and much loved) bands putting out records: LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend, Spoon, etc …
Speaking of, Spoon’s new album Transference will be out January 19th and you can stream the first song from it, “Written in Reverse” HERE. Sounds pretty…well, spoony: foot-tap-inducing guitar riffs, witty/catchy lyrics, and a nice chugging rythm section.
Next up will be Hot Chip, when they release One Life Stand on February 8th (just in time for v-day, you funny guys you). They previously streamed “Take it in” over at pitchfork (pretty good, if not a little more down-tempo than their normal stuff), and now are offering their title track for stream over at their myspace page (a more dancey number with a great funky guitar riff, and of course the clever lyrics). I prefer “Take it in”, but fans of Hot Chip won’t be disappointing by either.
The Editors have a new album coming out as well and will be touring in 2010 to support it. I’ve kind of lost interest in this band since their debut, but I know they put on a pretty good show, so if you’re interested, they’ll be at the 9:30 club on Feb. 21st.
Totally unrelated: I just finished The Beatles anthology DVD’s after seeing McCartney this past spring, and i highly recommend it to anyone who’s a Beatles fan or is looking for a thorough primer on them. Some awesome previously unreleased material/footage on it that is worth the time. Here is a sample of them talking about how the idea of Sgt. Peppers started.

Spoon have a new EP coming out, which you can now pre-order over at merge records. This new single “Got Nuffin’” is sounding pretty good. They have added a little more crunch to their sound on this one and it works out well.

Spoon’s newest album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, despite it’s unfortunate name, is a very solid album. Merge Records is streaming it in it’s entirety with hopes of enticing you to purchase it when it comes out on July 10th. I don’t think they will have to worry.

I am really enjoying the new Spoon single “The Underdog” and am looking forward to the new album Ga-times-5 (pre-order here), but doesn’t it sound somewhat similar to Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys are Back in Town”? Just substitute the electric guitar for acoustic and take out the anthemic chorus. Maybe i am taking crazy pills but i really hear a similarity. Decide for yourself:
