Coachella 2009 Recap: Friday

This year, my sixth attending the coachella festival, was probably my least anticipated.  Not because of the lineup or anything like that but i had a lot of trips and stuff leading up to it, so i really didn’t have much time to get my hopes up, etc. until the week of the actual festival.  Which may be why i ended up enjoying it as much, if not more than any year I can remember.  Pretty much every band we saw either lived up to expectations or surpassed them and the festival itself just overall seemed much more enjoyable.

Here is my breakdown of every band we caught.  Some of them we only saw a couple songs before we headed elsewhere, so by no means is this meant to be taken as anything other than musings, as i can’t seriously write off a band if i don’t see an entire set.  That said, enjoy.

Coachella Releases Digital Magazine

digital

Looks like we’re getting close to coachella 2009, as more news keeps creeping up. Seems this year they are releasing an online magazine called Coachella Digital to help familiarize festival-goers with the bands and past fests. Pretty cool design actually. Not sure if there will be more than one issue leading up to the fest, but it seems like it.

Read it here.

Chemical Brothers, The Orb, and others added to Coachella

Ask and ye shall receive.  According to the LA Times:

Coachella festival producers Goldenvoice are beefing up the dance offerings this year with a few notable additions to the 2009 lineup. The Chemical Brothers, Etienne De Crecy and the Orb are all now confirmed as late additions.

Additionally, Devendra Banhart and Murder City Devils will join the three-day annual fete in the desert next month.  The Chemical Brothers appearance is a DJ set only, meaning they will be playing other material besides their own catalog of dance-floor staples in a more casual performance devoid of all the bells and whistles.

Coachella Lineup 2009 – McCartney, Killers, Cure Headlining

Looks like Coachella released their lineup in the wee hours of the morning. And I’m sure Ryan is going to kill me for posting this since he has been the one refreshing the page every day, it had to be done.   Just as usual, it’s not the headliners that make the show (although McCartney is a big one), there a slew of bands every day of this festival that I wouldn’t want to miss, moreso than in previous years. Looks like Coachella finally got My Bloody Valentine (would hate to play the stage opposite them).

So no Bowie Doing Stardust or a Smiths Reunion, and I’m also a little dissapointed about there being no Animal Collective, but I’m sure I’ll be seeing them in the spring anyway.  Can Amy Winehouse still stand up straight for more than 5 minutes? Should the Killers really get a headlining spot above some of those other bands?

Coachella is boasting a little bit of a different look this year as well.

Coachella to offer layaway plan

USA Today is reporting that Coachella will be offering a layaway plan for those intending on getting the 3-day tickets:

Layaway plans, recently resurrected by Sears and other retail chains, will be available to consumers who buy tickets to several 2009 festivals, including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It returns April 17-19 in Indio, Calif.

After the indie-rock fest lineup is unveiled this week, fans will have two options besides money up front when buying a $269 three-day pass: pay half down and the rest April 1, or pay 10% followed by equal installments on March 1 and April 1 without interest or additional fees. The plans are sold only online and aren’t available for $99 single-day admission.

Pretty good idea.

Bowie to resurrect Ziggy Stardust for Coachella?

According to gigwise, there is a good chance that might just happen:

David Bowie is in talks to headline the 2009 Coachella festival in Los Angeles, according to reports.

Organizers are said to have launched a new bid to attract the singer after discussions for Bowie to headline last year’s event fell through.

It’s claimed that he has been asked to perform his 1972 album, ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’, in its entirety at the festival.

“Coachella tried to book Bowie last year and he refused, so they got Prince to headline instead,” a source told the Daily Stars newspaper.

“But there’s a very strong chance they will be able to persuade him this year.”

That would be ridiculous. Refresher of the first time he did it:

It is rumored that the official lineup will come out tomorrow.  A week later than it has the past two years.
