Review: The Postmarks @ The Hi-Dive, Denver 10/06/09

There were nine total paid entrants for The Postmarks at the Hi-Dive on Monday, but you couldn’t tell by the performance. This Florida three-piece (plus two) filled the small room with a crowded sound of layered guitars and thick synth. Based on a cursory listen to their self-titled LP a couple of years ago I expected a retro-poppy collection of three minute nostalgia pieces. Even their album art suggests a beatnik Café house band. But The Postmarks rock. Their dense and heavy live sound encases songstress Tim Yehezkely’s relentless driving vocals. The band is tight and loud but understated, except for Keyboardist Jeff Wagner who sported a Darth Vader mask. For the last number, Yehezkely’s sang through what looked like a paper towel roll to create an effective DIY voice box.

By the looks of their merch booth, they have a new full length which includes some songs appearing on previous releases (along with new ones) titled Memoirs At The End Of The World. This is a band just taking off, yet they approached this show – which must have been a disappointing turnout – with professionalism and power. They even posed for a few pictures with a few fans after the set. They are at the front end of a month-long swing through the U.S., which includes a show in Brooklyn with Au Revoir Simone. They are in Boulder Tuesday night.
