The Besnard Lakes – Devastation
The Beach Boys are influencing indie rock more and more these days and the Besnard Lakes are one of those bands that are utilizing that influence and adding their own style to it, kind of a Beach Boys moon the dark side of town. The slow pace of the album will put you into a nice lazy trance. This track explodes off the album for me and is a good climax from the tracks coming before it. Purchase here.
Ryan Adams – Rip Off
When i heard the news of his new album coming out, i had to find some live versions of the songs. This one is my favorite of the ones i found. This is ryan at his “failed relationship, my life sucks…come back home” best. A piano ballad makes it even better. Not to mention his banter after the song ends where he says that it is better that he stops smoking, if not “more sad bastard songs will happen…i wish i was dead….master of failed relationships”. hysterical self-deprecation. Somme – Massless
A completely instrumental track with dynamic changes and some nice guitar lines. The atmosphere starts out just drifting along, then the song breaks down to some hand claps and drum beats only to build back up with a wall of distortion. Can;t wait to hear the rest of this album.Myspace
The Mother Hips – Time We Had
Pretty low production quality, in a good way somewhat fuzzy rock n roll guitars that remind me a little of dinosaur jr, and the vocals that have a pop sensibility to them.Purchase here.
Herman Dune – Not on Top
This song came on shuffle for me today and i think it’s great. Love his no-nonsense lyrical delivery. This song is off of their 2005 album of the same name, this Anti-folk (?) band also had an album out last year. Memorable lyrics: “I feel a little strange / Feels like I’ll never get my shit together / 27 and I’m fucked / Well, it’s 10 years from teenage / and that’s a / freaking lot / I think I’m getting old”. Nine Inch Nails – Get Down Make Love
The news of the new album had me going through my older material and i found this hidden gem. This cover of the Queen classic is on NIN’s Sin single release. Back in the day i was one of those nerds collecting every single NIN “Halo” and i am glad i did, because this is Trent at his best: raw, guilt ridden, and full of sexual inuendos (the moaning samples don’t hurt). My favorite part is in the end where it sounds like your going hyperspeed through thousands of samples linked together…ending with the great queen guitar riff. Purchase here.
