I have been championing Nicole Atkins since her jaw dropping performance opening for the infamous CYHSY/The National show at Bowery Ballroom in 2005. Finally she is coming out with her debut album, Neptune City, June 26th on Columbia Records.

Wow, Columbia Records…guess i wasn’t the only one paying attention to this country-meets-soul crooner. Her first song from the album, “The Way It Is” (MP3), is certainly a much darker song than any of her previous songs, but that is a good thing. Looks like Nicole is really digging deep for her new material. This song sounds like something that could be played during the heartbreaking finale scene of a 60′s love story where the girl finally comes to the realization of just how inevitably fateful her relationship will end. Like they always say Nicole, “you always want what you can’t have”.

The only thing I want right now is to hear the rest of this album. Until then, be sure to check her out at SXSW at the following dates:
