Local Band to Watch: Secret Mountains
I apologize….
…for somehow sleeping on the baltimore band Secret Mountains. It seems their EP Kaddish came out back in August of 2009 and i didn’t know anything about them til today. I promise to do better. *chuckle*
All kidding aside, this is great music, and I am not just saying that because these guys (and gal) are from charm city. Their sound reminds me of a female fronted (think folky Feist) Small Sur: Calm, natural flowing music (like the gentle lapping of the ocean), with a nice electric guitar and banjo in the background keeping things dynamic.
Vocals are used more as just another instrument in the songs rather than in the forefront, so as not to disturb the serene feeling that’s been created. If your life was a movie, this would be the accompaniment to your saturday morning coffee…or maybe plays while your laying out in the middle of a field in the summer looking up into the sky.
The best part? You can download the EP entirely for free (or buy it for $5 to support the band).
Here is my favorite song (wait for the build up at the 3:20 mark):
Secret Mountains – Gate/Gate/Paragate (MP3)
They also recently did a live session at Mobtown Studios, where they performed 8 old/new songs along with a Smokey Robinson cover of “I Second That Emotion”. That entire session is also available for download here, with a couple videos of it after the jump.
OR see the band for yourself at The Hexagon on March 12th or at The Wind Up Space April 22nd.
