Junior Boys – Black Cat – 5/5/09

Max Tundra put on a quirky yet entertaining opening set which reminded me of a casio-loving lounge singer.  Remember when you were 10 and had your first casio and spent hours messing around with the simple back-beats and preloaded effects?  I don’t think Max ever got sick of it.  Not sure I would go simply to see Max, but i applaud his unabashed enthusiasm and outside the box thinking.

Then Marisa showed up and here was her take on Junior Boys:

So after slaving away at my final project for my planting design class, there were 2 things I wanted to do after all was said and done: Have a drink and dance. Luckily, I received a text from Ryan that he was at the Junior Boys show, so I made my way to the Black Cat to meet him. I missed the opener (Max Tundra), but I got there right in time for the Junior Boys. I had just seen them a couple weeks ago at the Coachella Fest, but I wanted to see a full set and preferably when I wasn’t sweating to death from the desert weather.

If you are looking to dance your face off, well a Junior Boys show might not be what you are looking for…but if you are looking to groove and chill then they are totally for you. Backing tracks, knobs and buttons are doing most of the work, so the band is not as interactive as one might desire. However their synth-heavy beats totally make up for it.

They also have a kick ass drummer, which adds to the liveness of the music and Jeremy Greenspan picks up the occasional guitar when not at the keys. Greenspan’s voice is smooth and sexy and quite reminiscent of Wham. They played alot from their new release, Begone Dull Care. This album sounds very 80’s to me, in a good way. They also played “Birthday” from Last Exit which was a pleasant surprise and ended the set with “Under the Sun” which builds and builds and then explodes into boisterous energy.

I thought the sound at the Cat was great, mainly because I was dancing right in front of the stack. Sometimes you want the music to blow you away and this was one of those nights.
