I think the Grammys are pretty weak—much weaker than the best-of-2009 lists I've been seeing in the blogosphere. However, when you look at how the Grammys are defined, it makes much more sense: "Best New Artist is awarded to a performer who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist (which may not necessarily be their first proper release)." Now, on some level MGMT isn't new. But they certainly didn't enter into the public's consciousness after 2005's Climbing to New Lows. And, in my opinion, there's a reason for that. That album wasn't great. So, maybe it'd be better for this award to be renamed to Breakout Artist of the Year. Nonetheless, the selections of breakout artists of 2009 are poor. I think you'd be better off here with Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, or Passion Pit -- all bands that while Indie and not "new," still really jumped into the public's awareness to a whole new degree in 2009.
