Grammy’s Best “New” Artists, Can You Say “Out Of Touch”?
I just got a good laugh looking at this years grammy’s nominees for Best New Artist:
- Zac Brown Band
- Keri Hilson
- MGMT
- Silversun Pickups
- The Ting Tings
Ok, I will skip the first two because I have no idea who they are and, if I don’t know who they are then they don’t matter. Ok, kidding, but they are probably some poppy stuff that I wouldn’t listen to anyway. Let Me just speak to the last three to make my point…. THESE AREN’T NEW ARTISTS!
MGMT
Oracular Spectacular came out in 2007! They have been a band since 2005! Just because you might have just picked up on them Grammy’s doesn’t mean they are NEW!
Silversun Pickups
Despite the fact that it’s just weird they are even being considered for a Grammy (they are OK, but grammy material? Where will they be in 10 years? You might as well nominate Smashing Pumpkins), their album Carnaverous came out in 2006!
The Ting Tings
You nominated a band that sings glorified cheerleader chants to win a Grammy. Give me an L! Give me an A! Give me an M! Give me an E!.
Just when I thought the Grammy’s couldn’t get more irrelevant.

Dunno about the 1st one but Keri Hilson is so not a new artist either.

I hear what you’re saying. I think the Grammys are pretty weak—much weaker than the best-of-2009 lists I’ve been seeing in the blogosphere. However, when you look at how the Grammys are defined, it makes much more sense:
“Best New Artist is awarded to a performer who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist (which may not necessarily be their first proper release).”
Now, on some level MGMT isn’t new. But they certainly didn’t enter into the public’s consciousness after 2005’s Climbing to New Lows. And, in my opinion, there’s a reason for that. That album wasn’t great.
So, maybe it’d be better for this award to be renamed to Breakout Artist of the Year.
Nonetheless, the selections of breakout artists of 2009 are poor. I think you’d be better off here with Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, or Passion Pit — all bands that while Indie and not “new,” still really jumped into the public’s awareness to a whole new degree in 2009.
And, yes—the Grammys are irrelevant.

Take a look at the other nominees .. especially Nickelback who are in the Hard Rock category. The Grammy’s were great. They honoured good artists that made good songs. Now, winning a Grammy is like winning 10 bucks in the Lottery…
