Earlimart @ Ottobar 8/2

I am pretty new to Earlimart, I had just listened to Treble & Tremble about 6 months ago and really got into it and then fell in love with the new album, Hymn and Her. The songs are very well written dreamy pop songs with Elliott Smith vocal stylings only with more pop instrumentation. Going into this show I really had no expectations and by the end of the show wasn’t competely blown away but was more in a kind of relaxed semi-blissfull state (although that could have just been the alcohol).

The Ottobar was unbelievably empty for a Saturday night, there were maybe 30 people standing in the lower stage area during the show, I felt a little bad for the band considering they just put out an excellent album, but it wasn’t all that bad for the audience there beause of the intimate vibe. Earlimart kicked off the show (or maybe it was the second song, I can’t remember) with “God Loves You The Best”, one of the catchiest songs off of Hymn and Her and the most Elliott Smith’esque of all the songs, it could almost be a counterpart to “The White Lady Loves you More”.

They then continued to play most songs off of the new album plus a couple older ones. Overall, Earlimart put on a down to earth show, your probably not oging to do any headbanging during their set, or see Espinoza crowd surf (although good thing he didn’t because the audience was so sparse that he would have just plopped to the floor). But it is a show worth seeing if you are in the mood to be basked by some sweet melodies and the soft vocals of Espinoza and Murray.
