Phoebe Jean and The Air Force “Day Is Gone”

Over a month ago I had caught a really great afterhours party at one of the artist lofts with Guttermagazine. The party was Dj’d by James Nasty and there was a really great singer that was up on the tables completely blowing everything up, it was quite impressive but we ;eft unable to figure out who this was. It took a little time, but we finally were able to figure it out (tks to gutter), Phoebe Jean and the Air Force. Highly recommended.

‘Searching For Sugar Man’

What an amazing story of this documentary, Searching For Sugar Man, which basically follows two guys trying to find the musician Rodriquez, who put out 2 albums in the 70′s that didn’t do too well in the states (due to his label only having AM radio distribution), but unbeknownst to him ended up going platinum in south africa and 5x platinum in australia while he was off in detroit working typical blue color jobs to get by.
The kicker is that his music is damned good 60/70 pop-psychedelia that wouldn’t seem odd sitting next to The Beatles and Harry Nilsson in your record collection.
Check out the amazing guitar riff on the second song on the album, ”Only Good For Conversation”:
Rodriguez – Only Good for Conversation (MP3)
And the main single he’s know for:

Daniel Johnston “Space Ducks”

Daniel Johnston, the fairly prolific schizophrenic songwriter and spotlight of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston , has a very interesting series of projects that were released last month. Johnston has put out Space Ducks, a comic book accompanied by an album and an ipad game (links below). The album is actually quite good ( now if someone would just buy me an iPad then I could test out the game).

“March 13, 2012, Johnston released his first comic book, Space Ducks – An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness at SXSW in Austin, Texas, published by BOOM! Studios. The comic book is complimented by the Space Ducks album and an iOS app.”
