Tycho “Dive”

Tycho, who you might also know as Scott Hansen or ISO50, has a new full-length out that is the perfect morning listening experience. There is just something serene about this album that makes for a very pleasant listening experience, I can imagine putting this on while driving a sunset along coastal highway (or something like that).

Drive Soundtrack

I watched the new Ryan Gosling movie Drive last night and it was a pretty badass movie, In true 80′s fashion (that reminded me a bit of Michael Mann’s Thief). The previews didn’t really do it justice and didn’t capture the feel of the movie at all… it made it seem a lot more like a generic action movie when it’s actually pretty slow moving (in a good way), there are a lot of awkward silences between Goslings character and Carey Mulligan (seriously, who actually just stares at each other for that long in real life without saying anything).

But I digress, one of the best parts of the film is the soundtrack that is full of 80′s inspired electro-pop. I feel like part of the sountrack sounds really familiar as well, I want to say that they use bits from Trent Reznor’s Social Network soundtrack in some parts of the movie but can’t confirm this anywhere (has a movie ever borrowed form another original soundtrack before?).

This is one of the prominent songs on the soundtrack.

01 “Nightcall” – Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx

Stream Ryan Adams “Ashes and Fire” on NPR

Ryan Adams new album is available for streaming on NPR (and while you are there you might as well take a listen to the Wilco show from last night as well as the new DJ Shadow and Zola Jesus album). Haven’t listened too much yet, but so far sounds pretty good, at least better than the last couple.

Video: Is Tropical “Lies” (NSFW)

This video, for London based band Is Tropical, was created by Jacques Magazine’s Jonathan Leder and is a pretty catchy tune for a friday. The video doesn’t hurt either.

This is off their upcoming debut album Native To, which is out October 14th on Kitsune Records.

sidenote – If you haven’t seen Jacques yet and are into a more artistic/aesthetic erotic magazine, be sure to check it out, from what i’ve seen it’s very well done.

Ministry = Synth, Dub?

My limited memory of the band Ministry was always back in high school when my neighbor came over and played me the earth-scorching track “Jesus Built My Hotrod”. So consider me shocked to find out via Waves at Night that they actually started out in the early 80′s dabbling in synth and dub.

Before they recorded their synth-pop debut (think depeche mode) they came out with some singles on vinyl, which included the amazing dub edit below.

Ministry – Cold Life Dub (MP3)

Next they came out with With Sympathy, which they claim their label forced them into making a “synth” album.   Sure it’s a bit dated sounding, but it’s actually pretty good. Check out a track below, and stream the whole thing for free on mog.com here.

I imagine them watching the above video and reacting like someone seeing their senior pictures 20 yrs later.  Seriously, this was the same band that came out with this song in 1991? Things yah learn.
