Sphere of Influence – !!!

This reoccurring series focuses on a bands sphere of influences and what influences those bands might have had in the past…repeat. Kind of a down the rabbit-hole and seeing where it takes me.  This is by no means meant to be complete, just a musical exploration of sorts.  Contributions and further input are greatly appreciated to keep the discussion going in the comments.

So I was going through my normal music sites checking out new and old finds among the blog world when i tripped onto Shriekback on WavesatNight.com.  Old school, relatively-unknown early 80′s band that features danceable bass lines with introspective/heady lyrics.  Sound like anyone else we know?  Especially one early particularly political-leaning Louden up Now album?  Huh?

Just listen to this song and tell me !!! wasn’t influenced by this band.

New Justice Video: Civilization

Here’s Justice’s new buffalo-future-ific video for their single “Civilization”, off their upcoming album due out later this year.  Pretty sweet, and the parts of the song that i can hear over the annoying sound effects sound pretty good.  You can buy the single sans sound effects on itunes.

Malkmus’ ‘Mirror Traffic’ Set for August, Produced by Beck

Pretty excited about this collaboration, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are set to release Mirror Traffic August 23rd. The album is produced by Beck which will be his second production credit this year, the first being Thurston Moore’s Demolished Thoughts, which has been getting great reviews. Malkmus albums are always a treat, even if Real Emotional Trash was a bit indulgent and lengthy at times there were still some really great songs on it (One of which was about our fair city of Baltimore, or at least being in love with a soldier from it).
