Disco/Funk Throwback: SKYY
Before the blue-bottled vodka came the blue-hooded, intergalactic disco-funk jammers SKYY (who also may or may not be distant cousins to superman’s nemesis General Zod). I found this on vinyl while sifting through used records at the local goodwill and had to buy it for the record cover alone. Glad i did, pretty traditional funk/disco gems. This was their first album (1979), but apparently their big hit, “Call Me”, was from their 1981 release Skyy Line, which reached #26 on the billboard hot 100, and #1 on the R&B charts.

And their hit:
TEEEL “Triangle Waves”

I know that a lot of people are tired of the whole “Chill-Wave” style that flooded blogs last year, but I never really grew tired of it. It’s not like the music is tough to listen to and it still works for having in the background when I am working (re: Not distracting). However, It is nice to hear different takes on the style rather than what could be the same song over and over again. In comes TEEEL, who steps back from that bleached-out sound and creates “Chill-Wave” that has more of a pulse and is probably more influenced by italo-disco.

Radiohead “King Of Limbs” Influences
There has been much discussion, as usual, with the latest release by Radiohead, but one of the biggest criticisms I hear is that most the songs don’t really go anywhere. I think this can be chalked up to expectations, and not living up to them. However, I think if you have a better idea of what Radiohead have been listening to during the recording of King Of Limbs then you can have a better perspective on the album and it’s influences. Radiohead have never been ones to shy away from their influences, and the best part about Radiohead is that these influences are diverse, obscure and usually very experimental.
A few months ago Thom started posting lists of songs on DeadAirSpace with the subject line “Office Chart”. I took this to mean that these were songs that the band was listening to and these songs were seeping into their music. I found a lot of the songs on grooveshark, some I couldn’t find at all, but I think you will see a lot of similarities between what you hear on the new album and these songs (especially in the beats).
