Test Spin: Menomena’s Mines, MP3

There’s a scene in High Fidelity where rob walks into the record store and there is some crazy music playing, you see Barry looking at liner notes with his hand on his forehead.  Rob walks past the counter, then walks back, asking Barry “what the fuck is this?”, to which Barry begrudgingly replies something along the lines of “it’s a demo from those punks outside…and it’s REALLY good”.  Almost as if it pains him to admit just how good it is.

Now I’m not gonna quite go that far with Menomena’s upcoming album Mines, i mean i’ve only listened to it twice, but about 3 songs into the second spin, i did say something similar to myself; more along the lines of “fooook….this is good”.  You know when you hear an album a couple times and you think “ok, that’s it..throw everything else out, i know this album will dominate my time for the foreseeable future, no use even fighting it”.  That’s how i feel right now.

Maybe it’s a little premature, or hyperbole, but it’s how i feel.  We’ll see if it changes.  For now check out this song off the album, and look for the official release of Mines on July 27th.

The Wrens @ Sonar 5/22/2010

The Wrens at this point, to me, are gospel. They have done everything a band should NOT do in the modern music industry and the fact that they are still around is a testament to how good their music, and their live shows, are. Standing there at the Sonar side stage, listening to “Happy” (and how perfectly unhappy it is) and thinking about how this song sums up every relationship you might have known… it gives you chills, and then it gives you an outlet. They are probably the purest form of a rock band that I know, devoid of spectacle but a joy to watch, old but not washed up, completely ‘blue collar’, a band that you can put on a pedestal and look up to but is down to earth enough that you can talk to the band after the show.

The new songs sounded great, although I can’t really say what their names were or remember exactly which songs were new. They joked about their ‘expansive’ 2 day tour and the intimacy of the crowd. “We’ve played shows so small that we ask people to shout out their names” (everyone shouts out their name). It was too short of a show, they always leave you wanting more, even when the crowd cheers for 15 minutes after their final song for them to come back out. These guys probably won’t go down in rock history, might just be a blip on the radar, but that’s what makes being a Wrens fan so fun, and they definitely deserve a top spot in my own rock history.
