Blues Explosion
I saw this morning that a Greatest Hits of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (full stream) is being released to celebrate the band’s anniversary. This brought back many memories for me, being one of my favorite, albeit forgotten, bands in my later college years. Although I got into this band very late in the game, they provided hours of inspired music listening.
This is everything you want in a modern blues band, fusing together all kinds of music, very noisy, and just a lot of fun to listen to. This is a band that can easily pull off a traditional blues song with a little rust on it and then on the next song pull off something completely off-the-wall. I imagine The White Stripes are heavily influenced by Jon Spencer.
As far as I know they are still around, but the last album released was in 2004, so hopefully this means that there might possibly be a new album coming out. You can also hear Jon Spencer’s other project Heavy Trash which he has more recent recordings with and has a similar style.
Fun Fact: The band made the theme song to the Travel Channel’s No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain.

A friend at work has been playing this every morning. There is something about it that keeps it running through my head all day.
