The Antlers Take-away Show: “Two/Epilogue”

Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of my favorite albums in an attempt to come to terms with my top ten list of 2009.  Today The Antlers’ Hospice has not only been on heavy rotation, but i’ve also been looking quite a bit into the lyrics (the mystery of the hushed vocals make it almost necessary to find the lyrics online).  The album has had a good grip on me all day…and then some.  So it was quite apropos when i was watching a Phoenix take-away show, that I realized The Antlers’ show was put up just 9 days ago.

To say this album is heavy is an understatement, but well worth the emotional investment.  Possibly my Meadowlands of 2009.

The Antlers – Bear (MP3)

The first video is their hauntingly acoustic version of “Two” transitioned into “Epilogue”:

Kid Cudi on Conan Obrien

I was pretty blown away by this performance last week.   I have pretty much been ignoring this album, but kind of hard to ignore now after this performance and seeing it on all kinds of lists this year.

The Jumpcuts playing Accoustic Set Friday

In what is sure to be a unique friday night, local up and coming synth-moodsters The Jumpcuts are playing an acoustic set at Di[e]ce Boutique. Acoustic synth…didn’t think that was possible…but it sounds like THE FUTURE!

Free Sharon Jones XMAS MP3: “Ain’t No Chimneys In The Projects”

dap1048

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings released this christmas single, “Ain’t No Chimneys In The Projects”, a couple days ago…and it’s the tight funk/r&B/soul I’ve come to expect from the band (and their label).  You can get the MP3 for free if you sign up for their newsletter HERE.

PS – I recently bought Dapton Records’ compilation Daptone Gold (released 11/16) and i highly recommend it if you’re into that genre.  It’s amazing these songs are only a couple years old.  24 songs for 8 bucks.  Not Bad at all.

Here is a sample (Menahan Street Band – Make The Road By Walking):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

PSS – Did I mention Sharon Jones is playing the 9:30 club on NYE?

Pantha Du Prince “The Splendour”

The serene blippity bloopity Pantha Du Prince has another album coming out Feb 9th titled Black Noise. The newly released single “The Splendour” off this album is a great song to get down to work to. The lyrics of the song are great:

“Blip de bloop..blip bloop, blippp blip blippity blup blopp”. I think it’s a love song.

Beloved Rogue “Capital Sense”

Not a huge fan of the band name but the music has some nice dreamy qualities to it. I guess you could call this shoegaze, but it has a lot of melody to it, nothing too drowned out. This song just has a decent strolling and jangly rythym guitar line to it, a nice way to wash away the workday. Get their new EP and check out the rest of the music.

Dan Deacon Remixes Salvadore Santana

Dan Deacon

I’m not too familiar with the work of Salvador Santana but this is a great remix Dan Deacon has pulled out, fuzzy as hell.

Originally, GZA was featured over a remix of the song “Keyboard City” done by The Hood Internet. Now, Dan Deacon took that remix and dissected it into this an awesome blend of Vocoder / electro madness.

Grammy’s Best “New” Artists, Can You Say “Out Of Touch”?

pfft

I just got a good laugh looking at this years grammy’s nominees for Best New Artist:

- Zac Brown Band
- Keri Hilson
- MGMT
- Silversun Pickups
- The Ting Tings

Ok, I will skip the first two because I have no idea who they are and, if I don’t know who they are then they don’t matter. Ok, kidding, but they are probably some poppy stuff that I wouldn’t listen to anyway. Let Me just speak to the last three to make my point…. THESE AREN’T NEW ARTISTS!

MGMT

Oracular Spectacular came out in 2007! They have been a band since 2005! Just because you might have just picked up on them Grammy’s doesn’t mean they are NEW!

Silversun Pickups

Despite the fact that it’s just weird they are even being considered for a Grammy (they are OK, but grammy material?  Where will they be in 10 years? You might as well nominate Smashing Pumpkins), their album Carnaverous came out in 2006!

The Ting Tings

You nominated a band that sings glorified cheerleader chants to win a Grammy.  Give me an L! Give me an A! Give me an M! Give me an E!.

Just when I thought the Grammy’s couldn’t get more irrelevant.

New Shearwater MP3: “Castaways”, Album Details

ole-861

I’ve been a huge fan of Shearwater since they blew me away with their super-intimate/intense show at the backstage of the Black Cat.  The band is made up of a couple former members of Okkervil River, and while Okkervil is very good, i have to say i have grown to enjoy Shearwater even more.  That said it can come off as a little intense (especially his voice), so it’s probably not for everyone.  If you really wanna get the full experience, see them live, and it will give you a whole new appreciation for their recorded material.

So keeping with the “holy shit, 2010 is gonna be crazy for music releases” theme, Shearwater will be releasing The Golden Archipelago on feb. 23rd.  You can pre-order it HERE and get 15% off (the album includes a “50-page perfect-bound book that is a set of extracts from a dossier of records, photos, regulations and images collected by Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg”.  So there’s that.

Here is a song from the album the band was nice enough to release in order to wet your whistle (yes, i just said that).  It’s an epic/end-of-the-world-hope type vibe I have come to expect from the band, and lead singer Jonathan Meiburg’s almost-operatic voice is front and center.  Not gonna lie, pretty excited for the full album (and their tour in the spring).

Phoenix Play Take Away Shows

Phoenix brings their talent au natural to La Blogothque’s Take Away Shows, playing all around Paris. The best is Lisztomania where they take over a tour bus and then go into the lovely “One Too Many”.  Always surprised at how little these guys have to do to impress.
