10 Years of Beck’s Mellow Gold

No, this is not the 10 year anniversary of Mellow Gold, that would have been in 2004, but this is a documentary on the making of Mellow Gold that was released in 2004. I had never seen this before, and it’s pretty interesting.

Now, I always imagined the recording of Mellow Gold involving Beck on a farm somewhere in the middle of nowhere, with a lot of junked up cars sitting outside a barn. Beck on an 8-track in a barn with a bunch of livestock, huffing paint and sucking nitrous, and laying down tracks.  So I was a little disappointed when I found out that this album actually had a producer on it and was recorded in a studio. But it still is pretty interesting, and it’s cool to see early Beck performances when he looked 12.

A HEALTHy Morning, Live Vid & Daytrotter Session

HEALTH have been all over the place recently, which is nothing I can complain about. They stopped by Daytrotter yesterday to play “We are Water”, “Death” and “Perfect Skin”.

Also, they have a live set they played for Noisevox at Pianos, NYC videos embedded after the jump:

New Langhorne Slim “I Love You But Goodbye”

Print

According to a few of my friends, i missed out on one of the better shows of the year when Langhorne Slim came to the Ottobar a couple weeks ago, so will definitely have to check him out next time he comes around. In the meantime we have a good new song from him that, to me, seems to channel all the good things of Bob Seger, only in a more folky, rugged fashion. Be sure to check out his new album Be Set Free (Kemado Records, Sept 29.)

MEW Daytrotter Session

Mew showed up to Daytrotter yesterday for some low key versions of a few songs new and old.  They first play a nice rendition of  “New Terrain”, the opening track from No More Stories, although in this version it doesn’t sound like he is singing backwards.  They then go into “Zookeeper’s Boy” and “Special” just proving how great his voice just sounds naturally.

Albums

Pink Mountaintops – Axis of Evol
A friend at work introduced me to this album, from the lead singer in Black Mountain. It’s good stuff, i would start with “Plastic Man, You’re the Devil” or “Lord, Let us Shine”. It’s a good mix of the more rock’in music you might hear on a Black Mountain album and some mellower, folky, songs.

Pink Mountaintops “Lord, Let Us Shine”

YACHT – See Mystery Lights
The new album by YACHT has some surprisingly good songs on it. I never really got into him before, mainly because of the dissapointing show I saw when he opened for LCD and all he did was play the cd and sing over it (basically). There are some great beats and basslines on this and just some quirky kind of change-ups. Definitely danceable.

YACHT “I’m in love with a ripper”

Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs
I have been on a huge Yo La Tengo kick recently. Just as with the last Yo La release, this one has made me go back and relisten to all their albums. It’s perfect summer music, sometimes hazy and psychadelic and sometimes just deliciously poppy.

Yo La Tengo “Avalon or Someone Similar”

Throw Me The Statue – “Pistol”
TMTS continue with writing some perfect little lo-fi pop gems on their latest album “Creaturesque”. “Pistols” is a perfect example of what you will find on the album. There are even some songs on here that sound a bit Yo La Tengo’ish.

Throw Me The Statue “Pistols”

Woods “To Clean”
Caught the woods opening for Dungen on monday night and was pretty impressed, although pretty dissapointed they only had time for a few songs after going on late. The lead singer is like 90% mix of neil young and maybe a 10% buddy holly. I think live they come across a little better, the loose, somewhat jammy, quality of their material lends itself more to a live performance (especially with the strange effects going on using a microphone face mask), but there are still a lot of great songs on this album that capture it pretty well.

New Music Tuesday: Sally Shapiro, Mew + Free Johan Agebjörn Mix

my_guilty_pleasure-sally_shapiro_480

Two of my favorite albums of the year are officially out today:  Sally Shapiro’s My Guilty Pleasure and Mew’s No More Stories…

On first listen to Guilty Pleasure i was kind of skeptical, while it was certainly catchy and still had very much of a Sally Shapiro “sound” to it, the themes were almost opposite from Disco Romance.  Where her debut touched on the awesome, almost ignorance-is-bliss, aspects of the beginning stages of a relationship, Guilty Pleasure finds her on the other end…the end where things didn’t quite work out as planned in those early stages and all almost seems lost…and feels especially lonely.

After listening to the album more though, it’s those more serious/somber themes  that make me enjoy it even more than Disco Romance.  I guess it’s a more heavy album from an emotional standpoint, which took a bit to grow on me, but now i appreciate even more for it.  The beauty of Shapiro is that she can take these almost heartbreaking tracks and make them sound beautifully full of hope.

Also out today is Mew’s No More Stories, which goes the opposite route of the poppy Shapiro, and heads deep into psychedelic prog territory.  I’ve talked about how much we like this album, so all i can say now is we highly recommend it.  1st half = catchy rock songs with great licks, 2nd half = deeper down the rabbit hole into more experimental areas of sonic adventure (with even some slower songs thrown in there).  That’s the quick review.

Mew – Repeaterbeater (MP3)

BONUS: Sally Shapiro’s producer/beat master Johan Agebjörn just come out with a sweet italo-disco mix for FACT Magazine that you can download for FREE here.  I listened to it on my drive home yesterday and it’s really really good.

UPDATE:  Turns out Sally Shapiro is also giving away another track off the album, “Dying in Africa”, which is a cover of Nicolas Makelberge’s 2006 version.
