Coachella 2009 Recap: Friday

This year, my sixth attending the coachella festival, was probably my least anticipated.  Not because of the lineup or anything like that but i had a lot of trips and stuff leading up to it, so i really didn’t have much time to get my hopes up, etc. until the week of the actual festival.  Which may be why i ended up enjoying it as much, if not more than any year I can remember.  Pretty much every band we saw either lived up to expectations or surpassed them and the festival itself just overall seemed much more enjoyable.

Here is my breakdown of every band we caught.  Some of them we only saw a couple songs before we headed elsewhere, so by no means is this meant to be taken as anything other than musings, as i can’t seriously write off a band if i don’t see an entire set.  That said, enjoy.

Tribute To Charlie Cooper of Telefon Tel Aviv

charlie

Just after releasing their excellend 3rd full length EP, Immolate Yourself, in January of this year, Joshua Eustis announced that other founding member Charlie Cooper had died.   I had never gotten into Telefon Tel Aviv before and just began listening to this new album a month ago and it has been pretty much on constant repeat ever since.  I didn’t even know about Cooper’s death until looking it up on the wiki a couple weeks after hearing the album.  It’s sad and disheartening to know that one of the minds behind their music is now gone.

Now ambient group Fhloston Pardigm (five six media), hugley influenced by Telefon Tel Aviv has put out a couple songs in tribute to Charlie Cooper. The tracks are abstract atmospheric tracks, good introspective music. Take a listen to these and if you have yet to get into Telefon Tel Aviv, do so now, you won’t be sorry.

MP3 Inbox: Magic Wands, Holy F**k, Jarvis Cocker, The Cansecos

gibson_guitar_1_mailbox_cropped_op_800x337

I generally don’t like to jam a lot into one post, but things have been crazy with catching up on everything post-coachella…so bear with me.  First the mp3’s, then after the jump you will find details on the band’s tours, new albums, etc.

Magic Wands – Black Magic (MP3)

Magic Wands are currently on tour with The Horrors and and The Kills in support of their debut EP Magic Love & Dreams.  This doesn’t exactly sound like either of those bands, but it’s fun…my first thought was “if the pixies ever made a song for an iPod commercial this is what it might sound like.”

Holy Fuck – Jungles (MP3)

This is a previously unreleased track from the electro/noise rockers that might be more rock than electro and has a great buildup.  These guys are great live and are only getting better imo.

Jarvis Cocker – Angela (MP3)

Jarvis Cocker is coming out with another new album on May and this is the first song off of it.  He recorded it with Steve Albini and this song  reminds me of both elvis costello and a bit of ted leo (minus the edge).  It’s about a girl…shocker.

The Cansecos – Raised By Wolves (The Cansecos B-town remix)

I was a pretty big fan of  The Cansecos’ 2005 debut self-titled album, but then i kind of fell off with them.  Thakfully this has re-piqued my interest.  This is a song off their sophomore album Juices! that they remix with dance/disco effects that can’t help but make my head bob.  They also have a couple Disco mixes available for free download on their website.  IN.

SMD/Tittsworth Killed it Saturday Night

tittsworth

Simian Mobile Disco and Tittsworth’s back-to-back sets Saturday night at Sonar left me both exhausted and speechless for the rest of the night, if not the entire weekend.  I had spent a large portion of Saturday out in the sun having some drinks with friends, so it was a struggle to drag myself to the show, but once SMD took the stage I pretty much threw any thoughts of an early bed time out the window.  They absolutely killed it.

The crowd was 100% behind them too, asking (and receiving) a couple encores.  I was about to head out after their set finished, but was glad I didn’t because Tittsworth followed, and maybe even surpassed SMD’s efforts, bringing the place, at least from my vantage point, to it’s knees.  People were absolutely going nuts.

Please catch them if you have a chance.  Tittsworth is from DC so there should be many opportunities.

The Horrors: “Who Can Say” Video

They kind of sucked at coachella, but  The Horrors’ upcoming album Primary Colors (out May 5th) is really good.  Check out the video for “Who Can Say”:

Bob Dylan Announces Ballpark Tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp

baseball_smallThis sounds pretty cool:

Along with fellow troubadour Willie Nelson, this summer The Bob Dylan Show will also feature John Mellencamp, marking just the second time in the past 24 years that these three performers have shared the concert stage.

All concert tickets are priced at $67.50 and most shows are general admission, allowing fans to grab a seat in the stands or find a place to watch from the field. Tickets will go on sale throughout the month of May (see attachment) and will be available at the local ballpark ticket office and affiliated ticket outlets. *Children 14 and under get in free with each adult ticket holder.

Lee Ranaldo’s (Sonic Youth) Stolen Guitar?

A friend of mine just sent me this thread about a guy who bought a guitar off of ebay. It was sent to him and, when comparing it to a picture of a guitar stolen from Lee Ronaldo of Sonic Youth, he noticed it was the same guitar. Pretty cool. Not sure what I would do in this situation, probably return the guitar to them, but I would definitely play it a lot first.

DANCE! Saturday @ Taxlo w/ Simian Mobile Disco

taxlo_401_rgb

To celebrate Taxlo’s 7th anniversary Simian Mobile Disco, among others, will be playing what’s sure to be a memorable Saturday night at Sonar.  I spent many sets at the coachella dance tent hoping to continue the party once I returned home, so this is perfect.

For inspiration, here is a scene from coachella when we walked into the chemical brothers.  Classic:
