The Softer Side of Jet Set Siempre 1°

Last week i posted about the amazing new cassette from Clive Tanaka titled Jet Set Siempre 1°. The first side is titled “Side A: For Dance”, while the second is zenly “Side B: For Romance”. I posted two songs last week from Side A, and figured it’s worthwhile to prove that the mysterious Mr. Tanaka knows how to do downtempo just as good.

Speaking of mystery, through a lot of scouring the internet, i’ve come to find that there isn’t much to find about Clive Tanaka other than his brief website, and label. I’m not sure if these are original tracks (i am fairly certain they are) and even though the cassette was delivered with a return address of Chicago, there were Japanese stamps all over the small box, and the cassette cover itself references to his “orquesta”…so who knows what’s up. All i know is this is good stuff, and worth plopping down $6 and digging out your old cassette player/stereo for.

All of the songs are great on both sides, but my favorite “romance” track would have to be the ethereally chill finale “Lonely For the High Scrapers” (the guitar line in the beginning even vaguely reminds me of Beach House for some reason).  Unfortunetly i haven’t gotten the ok to offer up an MP3 of this song yet, but you can stream it below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Update: just got the ok to offer up the awesome opening track “All Night, All Right”, which is the best modern day hat-tip to Giorgio Moroder i’ve heard yet.  check it out:

Stream Junip’s (Jose Gonzalez) new single “Always”

We previously wrote about Junip, Jose Gonzalez’s on-again band, when they released their teaser EP Rope and Summit for free back in may. Since then it’s gotten many replays with anticipation of their full length, which is supposed to come out sometime in the coming months.

Now the first single from that full-length album, “Always” is available to stream over at their myspace page, and it’s just as good as the EP or anything else Jose Gonzalez has put out. Really chill. I can see this being a pretty perfect album for the fall.

Stream “Always” HERE.

Suuns Free EP

Suuns are being described as influenced by Joy Division and Can, not a bad mix of influences in my opinion. But as always you ned to listen to these bands before you can actually vouch for that kind of praise. I was pleasantly surprised when I started listening to this EP (although not sure I hear the JD), which you can download for the price of an email over on the Suuns site.

It has a drk post-rock rock feel to it, with some great experimental qualities to the album. A light voice threads over it all, similar to what HEALTH vocals sound like at their lightest.

Whartscape Outlook: Day 3 Sat. Current Space

SATURDAY JULY 24
CURRENT SPACE
12pm – 10:30pm

MUST SEE!
Lightning Bolt
Ever since I listen to Hypermagic Mountain I have wanted to see these guys live. I think I missed them when they played in Phili a couple months back, but now we got them in bmore for Whartscape and it should be an intensely fun show. The drummer for this band is amazing to watch, and even though they are from RI, they have the whole Wham City play on the floor thing down.

Arab on the Radar
Along the same lines as Lightning Bolt, Arab on the Radar play chaotic noise rock with a spastic drummer, also from RI. A lot of face melting going on early on.
Arab on the Radar “Number 3″

The Convocation Of
Heavy psychedelic rock music that doesn’t disappoint, think Hawkwind. I always tout The Entrance on our site, well this was formed by George France, Tonie Joy, and now The Entrance frontman Guy Blakeslee. After Guy Blakeslee left for The Entrance in 2002, the Convocation moved on in 2005 and spews forth some great psychedelic music along the same lines. Their recordings are limited, but their was an EP released last year.

Ed Schrader
Very funny, very entertaining artist. Last time I saw him he was just banging a drum and shouting out some hilarious dirges, not sure if he has expanded upon that since or not, but either way it will be an entertaining act on the day.

No Age
A ton of hype has been handed to this duo that is part of the LA underground scene along side another Whartscape artist, HEALTH. They have been a P4k favorite since their inception. I’ve never seen them and probably haven’t given them the listen they deserve, so I’ll probablk take thsi chance to see wha tthe hype is all about.
No Age “Sleeper Hold”

Small Sur
I’ve heard Small Sur on multiple occasions (the best was in Bob’s house last year) and love Bob’s work (and the beard as well). Prepare yourself for a dose of dream-folk.

Italians Do It Better: Solid Gold Compilation

Piggy-backing on my last post, which featured some blissed-out disco goodness, record label Italians Do It Better, home to some of the more recent italo/space disco bands such as Chromatics and Glass Candy, recently released a compilation called Solid Gold.  The labels description is:

Solid Gold is a collection of some early IDIB 12″s, most of which are out of print. Tracks were carefully selected and programmed by our own Johnny Jewel. This is not a mix cd. It is full tracks as they appear on the original 12″s. A compilation of sorts…

This entire compilation is the brainchild of Johnny [Jewel] (production/beat wizard behind both Glass Candy and Chromatics), and he put a lot of time into the tracklisting. We hope you enjoy it. Its perfect driving music.

I bought it a couple weeks back for a whole 5 BUCKS and have really been enjoying it, especially after the sun sets and the heat of the day starts to disappear into the twilight.  I highly recommend it and here is one of the reasons why (with vocals by Feist):

Jet Set Siempre 1° = want.

Finally got around to checking out pitchforks new “Deep Cuts” side project called Altered Zones and tripped onto this post from Get Off The Coast about Clive Tanaka y su orquesta presenta: Jet Set Siempre 1°.  A mouthfull, for sure…but not nearly as hard to consume as it is to try and say.

The good news: it’s some of the best dance/lounge/disco/awesomeness i’ve heard in a good bit (based on the 4 songs i’ve heard).  The bad: the fact it’s only available on cassette (for $6).  I will gladly pay $10 so i can listen to it in my car.  Pretty please?

Check it:

!!! (ChkChkChk) AM/FM

This album gets better and better with each listen, the opening song “AM/FM” is on i”ve started to love with each new listen. This album is quickly moving into my top 10 this year. After watching a few live shows, and listening to their albums, I will go out there an say they are a modern day Rolling Stones (think Stones on Funk). This is funky, very consistent music that is still very much based in traditional rock’n'roll. I really wish I could post more but the complete album is very fun to listen to. The song “The Most Uncertain Sure” is a great song. In it, you can hear a bassline that sounds so much like the Stones “Miss You”. The Album is really song after song of catchy dance music. Other highlights are “Steady as a Sidewalks Crack” and “The Hammer”.

Note: Although this album sounds great, seeing this band live will make you a believer.

Preorder this album now!

Whartscape Outlook: Day 2 Fri. Night @ H&H

FRIDAY JULY 23
H&H BUILDING
10:30pm – 2am

Friday night is what I am labeling the ‘Night of Electronic Haze’. A lot of Chill-wave, hazy electronic infused music will be swimming through your head by nights end.

PicturePlane
Electronic Musician Travis Egedy (PicturePlane) from Colorado is a great DJ to have for the nighttime crowd. It fits into the whole Memory Tapes, Washed out sound, although maybe a little more blippy. You might have heard PicturePlanes remix of Crystal Castles ‘Air War’.

Teen Girl Fantasy
If you were going to go see PicturePlane, then you might as well catch Teen Girl Fantasy as well. Along the same lines, although more minimalistic and Field’esque. I think Whartscape is trying to put people in a bit of a haze on Fri night.
Teen Girl Fantasy ‘Portofino’

Chandeliers
Out of Chicago, the Chandeliers , kind of like a tribal electronica, live drums mixed in with other soundscapes.
Chandeliers – In The Octagon

Adventure
This might be the chill-out music I am most looking forward to on Fri night. listen

“If Game Boy made soul music, it would sound like this. Both rinky dink and rapturously melodic, Adventure programs dense layers of synth lines and shifting beats that fall together like sonic Tetris. As addictive as a good video game – and you can’t lose.” -SPIN

Moss of Aura
One more time, can we all say together “Chill-Wave”. This all sounds very nice, but you might want to smoke a little catnip before you head over.
Moss of Aura ‘Cowboy’

Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez
It’s nice when going through these line-ups and finding someone you have yet to hear the strike a chord (get it) with you. This is some salt-of-the-earth folk music, strumming acoustic music with a driving rhythm and a unique voice. Has a bit of the that medieval Midlake sound, but a lot less dramatic.
Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez “PineconeEyes”
